Ankle Biters – First & Second Graders

Games are 6 v. 6 (no goalie) on a condensed field, with a coach from each team on the field as an instructional referee. Games are typically on weekdays and are set by the County. Davidsonville teams are limited to 10 players on a first-come first-served basis.  Additional teams may be added pending the availability of committed coaches (that’s you, parents!).  Two practices per week, initially, on days determined by the coach and the Commissioner.  After games begin, teams may cut-back to one practice and one game per week.

Uniform shirt and socks must be purchased at time of registration.  Kilt will be provided. Players need to provide stick, colored mouth guard, shin guards and a positive attitude!

Pee Wee – Third & Fourth Graders (must be 8 by first game)

Games are 7 v. 7 (6 field players and 1 goalie) on a condensed field, with two paid referees.  Games are typically on weekends.  Please note that a few weekday games and several weekends with both Saturday and Sunday games are to be expected.  Two practices per week, on days determined by the coach and the Commissioner.

Basic field hockey rules and skills are taught at this level.  Ability varies widely at this age in field hockey, so the focus is on teamwork and sportsmanship. If more than one team is formed, parent preference will be strongly considered.   If deemed safe and appropriate by the Coach, Commissioner and Parents, girls may play-up.

Uniform shirt and socks must be purchased at time of registration.  Kilt will be provided. Goalie equipment is provided.  Players need to provide stick, colored mouth guard, shin guards and a positive attitude!

Midgets – Fifth & Sixth Graders

Games are 11 v. 11 (10 field players and 1 goalie) on a 100 yd. field, with 2 paid referees and timekeeper/scorekeeper provided by the home team.   Basic field hockey rules and skills are reviewed, game strategies are taught and sportsmanship is stressed.  Two to three practices per week, at coach’s discretion.  In order secure an appropriate team placement within the division, and to ensure all players and coaches have a positive and instructional season, teams will be divided roughly into A and B.  Division of teams will be determined by ability, experience, fitness, and level of commitment.  Parent preference will be considered, but will not be determinative.

Uniform shirt and socks must be purchased at time of registration.  Kilt will be provided. Goalie equipment is provided.  Players need to provide stick, colored mouth guard, shin guards and a positive attitude!

Juniors – Seventh & Eighth Graders

Games are 11 v. 11 (10 field players and 1 goalie) on a 100 yd. field, with 2 paid referees and timekeeper/scorekeeper provided by the home team. Division of A and B teams will be determined by ability, experience, fitness, and level of commitment.  Expect three practices per week.

Uniform shirt and socks must be purchased at time of registration.  Kilt will be provided. Goalie equipment is provided.  Players need to provide stick, colored mouth guard, shin guards and a positive attitude!

Practice and Game Locations

Beginning in 2008, our home field for all games will be at DAA Park.  Some practices may be conducted there, however, the County will also schedule non-Davidsonville games at the Park during the week, so access to the field may be irregular.

We will continue to use the Ruritan as our regular practice field and storage facility.   Please observe parking restrictions that may be in place from time-to-time at the Ruritan.  When the facility is in use for a philanthropic purpose, parents and players are asked to park in the grassy lot designated for “Athletic Parking” and NOT in the blacktop lot.  We have a longstanding and amicable relationship with the Ruritan and hope that you will continue to foster this shared-use arrangement.

Volunteers

We always need coaches, assistant coaches, field liners and team parents, so please contact us now!  Do not wait to volunteer.   If you have never played or coached field hockey, you’re not alone!   We pair novice and experienced coaches together, and there will be a coaches clinic before practices begin, either at the end of July or early in August, as schedules allow.
